Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but … we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. From this, it seems that Nick sees the essence of humanity as the determination to ‘beat on’, echoing the language of the first glimpse of Gatsby.
The Great Gatsby is a recognized classic. Interestingly, the book did not sell very well during Fitzgerald’s lifetime, and when he died in 1940 he seemed to have regarded the book as a failure. When he died, scholars started to assess his work, and The Great Gatsby was recognized as an important work of literature.
